"If music be the food of love,” says Orsino in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, “play on!” “If you want to hit the right note,” said Gyles & George in the design studio one day, “pop on our keyboard sweater - you’ll love it.” It’s musical, it’s magical, it’s classy and it comes with its own accompaniment: a stylish matching scarf. The sweater and scarf together amount to a knitwear concerto - and when you appear in them, you’ll invariably be greeted by cries of “Encore!” The play Twelfth Night was originally staged at Christmas. Created in red and black and white the keyboard sweater was originally designed as a Christmas special - but the play and the sweater are now round-the-year favourites. As Shakespeare says somewhere else, they’re a hit - “a palpable hit!"

  • Gyles Brandreth -- a writer, entertainer, broadcaster, and sometime Member of British Parliament -- is also a former European Monopoly champion and founder of an award-winning teddy bear museum. In addition to all of these endeavours, he is also well-known throughout Britain for the colourful knitwear he has worn on television for more than forty years. In the early 1980s, he teamed up with George Hostler -- an artist and sculptor turned legendary knitwear designer -- to create a range of unique jumpers featuring bright colours, original designs, witty words, and trompe l’oeil images. Over the years, Gyles and George conjured up scores of individual jumpers – worn by personalities as varied as Elton John and Diana, Princess of Wales – and produced three books featuring their free-spirited and wholly individual patterns.
